Field investigations of seepage in the Inguri arch dam

Hydrotechnical Construction Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

Field observations of the concrete masonry of the Inguri dam show impermeability of the high-quality compacted concrete and interblock joints. Seepage in the galleries is confined mainly to the ungrouted intersectional joints and defective zones of the concrete masonry.

  2. 2.

The watertight seals and drainage system of the upstream face are sufficiently effective and practically prevent seepage into the dam. Observations of the readings of the piezometers and piezodynamometers in the dam revealed a high permeability of the concrete masonry.

  3. 3.

The total seepage discharge through the concrete masonry of the upstream face of the dam as of February 16, 1980 was 12 liters/sec. Completion of the work on grout sealing of the dam will substantially reduce seepage.
