Controlling the quality of compaction of earth fill in the construction of high dams

Conclusions

  1. 1.

To ensure a high rate of construction and reliability of earth dams it is suggested to check the quality of compacting coarse-grained soils of a nonpiping composition with respect to fines (e.g., with respect to particles with a diameter smaller than 1–5 mm) and soils of a piping composition — with respect to the soil as a whole.

  2. 2.

In the case of a wide range of variation of the granulometric composition of soils being placed in a dam it is necessary to differentiate the requirements imposed on their density with respect to the granulometric composition. It is possible to control the granulometric composition of soils with a high degree of nonuniformity on the basis of the content of one or two characteristic fractions.

  3. 3.

A check of these principles of quality control of the compaction of coarse-grained soils by the experience of constructing the Nurek dam showed their practical value.
