Conclusions
-
1.
Methods are given for estimating the reliability of earth dams under seismic loads in the framework of simplified models: quasistatic (linear spectral) theory of seismic stability and the well-known Newmark scheme.
-
2.
The methods permit an approximate consideration of the effect of the main factors determining the reliability of a structure: intensity and frequency of earthquakes, life of the structure, water level in the upstream and downstream pools, character of information about the deformation and strength parameters of the soil, models of limit states, etc.
-
3.
The characteristics of reliability (probability of no failure) obtained can be used for comparing different variants of structures as well as for comparison with certain available characteristics of reliability (obtained on the basis of the statistics of failure and damages of structures of the given type).
-
4.
The calculation examples given illustrate the effect of a number of the main factors on the reliability of earth dams.
