Operational approaches in regional and urban economics

Summary

The article gives a description of a series of operational models in the field of regional and urban economics.

The first example is that of a locational decision model based on multiple criteria; an application is made to the case of automated industries to be located in agricultural areas or declining industrial regions.

The next model to be described is a micro-regional model for the Netherlands. It is written in dynamic form, includes explicit investment dynamics and treats with great care spill-over and spin-off effects between regions. Its sectorial extension leads quite naturally to a dynamic version of the Klaassen attraction model.

Finally some urban models are discussed. Either from theoretical analysis, or through simulation exercises, hypotheses for the study of urban dynamics are derived. Special attention is given to the structure of the corresponding transition matrices.
