Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The ancient world was characterized by conscious alteration of primordial (natural) ecosystems and creation of new ones (cultivated) suitable for human life and capable of providing provisions. Various multipurpose water projects were particularly important.

  2. 2.

    Together with their direct functions, ancient water projects purposely served environmental functions, particularly that of exerting a selective beneficiai effect on climate.

  3. 3.

    Cessation of the normal operation of ancient water projects led to rapid destruction of the artificial ecosystems and deterioration of climatic conditions in adjoining territories.
