The effect of a temperature dependent friction force on fusion cross sections

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Physik A Atoms and Nuclei

Abstract

We have studied the introduction of temperature dependence in the friction coefficients within a phenomenological description of heavy ion reaction. Fusion cross sections of medium and heavy systems have been calculated. It turns out that within the “soft” friction limit the increase of friction with temperature enhances the capture process for medium systems and it inhibits fusion for heavy systems, as observed in the experimental data. This provides encouragement for improving the conventional classical models for fusion and deep inelastic scattering of heavy ions at low energies.
