Abstract
The afterglow intensity of 5 selected sections of the VUV spectrum of an Argon discharge is measured as a function of time (0–50 μs) after a discharge pulse. The decay behavior of theλ=104.8 nm andλ=106.7 nm resonance lines can be interpreted from the assumption of binary encounters of metastable Ar atoms with eachother and with other partners. Two continua nearλ=108 nm andλ=125 nm are due to decays of excited Ar2 molecular states. The observed Ly-α radiation of hydrogen is explained in terms of the model of Bertschingeret al [1]. The results contribute to a clarification of the theoretical concepts concerning gas discharges in Argon.
