Abstract
In KBr-crystals containing about 1016 colour centers per cm3 electron avalanches were generated by very short light pulses near breakdown fieldstrength. The temporal development of the avalanche current leading to breakdown has been investigated by fast oscilloscopic techniques. We determined the formative time of breakdown being in the order of 4 to 1 · 10−7 sec as a function of electric field strength, avalanche size and crystal thickness.
