Calculation of phase space compression by friction plus rf acceleration for charged particles

Abstract

Frictional phase space compression for charged particles is treated in closed form. The basic idea is to accumulate the particles in a “synchrotron” with the frictional energy loss compensated on the average by rf acceleration and thus reduce the transverse phase space.
