Polyvinylpyridine with oleic acid and polymethylmethacrylate mixtures in monolayers

Abstract

Studies were carried out on mixed monolayers of a polymer with ionizable polar groups and a practically “horizontal” disposition, poly-2-vinylpyridine, with i) a low-molecular-weight substance likewise with a horizontal disposition, oleic acid, and ii) a non-ionic polymer, again with a horizontal disposition of the hydrocarbon chains, polymethyl-methacrylate.

The mutual compatibility of the components in all mole ratios, and the greater thermodynamic stability of the mixtures, were shown in both systems.

A comparison of the spreading isotherms at the W/air, W/hexane, W/octane, w/benzene and W/1,2-dichlorobenzene interfaces suggests that the mutual miscibility is attributable to interactions among the chains and among the polar groups.
