Summary
In the paper chromatographic separation and identification of univalent alcohols, use can be made of their reaction products with 3-nitrophthalic anhydride or diphenic anhydride, which as acid esters are easily detected on paper with umbelliferone or 4-methyl umbelliferone under the ultraviolet lamp. Isoamyl alcohol-conc. ammonia-water (30:15:5) has been found to be the best solvent mixture for this purpose.
This method was used to determine theR F values of 20 alcohols. It also proved possible to detect methanol in ethanol (in the form of the diphenate) down to 0.5% methanol. A technical fusel oil was also separated.
