Abstract

In this paper we present data for excitation and quenching rate coefficients of the N2 (C 3 П u ) state as a whole and for itsv=0,v=1 andv=2 vibrational levels. The results have been obtained using a steady state non-selfsustained discharge in pure nitrogen (and also in a 95% N2+5% H2 mixture) and by absolute measurements of radiation from the gas. We also discuss in detail our experimental apparatus and procedure.

Additional information

Authors are indebted to Dr Lj. Zeković for many useful discussions on various measuring problems and to Mr. Q. Kamberi for the help during the calibration. The correspondence with Prof. A.V. Phelps has been a source of many important ideas and his help has been considerable. Prof. J. Moruzzi has supplied us with our first photocathodes.
