Abstract

In this study the effect of simulated acid rain on the surface tension of leaves of selected crop plants is reported. The contact angle measurements of liquids (water and n-propanol mixtures) on various plant leaves (bean, mustard, lettuce, cress) showed that the acid rain effect can be investigated when analyses of the surface tension of leaves are estimated. Acid rain was found to give rise to a change in the polar surface tension of leaves, while the apolar surface tension was unaffected. This effect was strongest in bean leaves, which suggests that this is related to the polar surface tension of leaves.
