Summary
A micromethod, developed from the procedure ofKlempt andRitter, is announced for the determination of phenols in sewages. A series of macrochemical studies were required for the development of this method. In particular, the influence of the concentration of the phenol solutions, the bromine excess, the reaction period of the potassium iodide were given special attention. It was found that tribromo substitution was attained after no more than 15 minutes with phenol concentrations below 0.8%, as opposed to 60 minutes in the macromethod. A threefold excess of bromine was found to be optimal, whereas in the macromethod a 2–2.5 excess is required. The mean molecular weight of the total steam-volatile phenols was determined by experiments and the stated factors were recognized as allowable for the standard determination. The materials interfering with the titration are best removed by means of ammoniacal copper sulfate. The volatile phenols are carried over with a current of carbon dioxide in the distillation. A micro distillation apparatus that has proved most suitable for this purpose can be used for a number of other cases also.
