Summary
A description is given of an accumulation of traces of halides in mineral waters through precipitation exchange in a working procedure and also their microdetermination. The accumulation of the various halides occurs on different exchangers and is selective because of the different solubilities of their silver salts. The solubility of silver bromide and chloride, which can be detected micro-analytically, is effectively eliminated by previous saturation with the corresponding silver salt. The introduction of a silver iodide column is not necessary because of the too low solubility of silver iodide.
The iodide and bromide are determined, following oxidation to iodate or bromate, by means of “combination titration” with 0.001N sodium thiosulfate. The latter's titer is greatly stabilized by adding amyl alcohol-chloroform (1:1) and sodium tetraborate and by avoiding contact with carbon dioxide and thio bacteria through the use of very pure distilled, carbon dioxide-free water and use of a soda lime tube and cotton moistened with amyl alcohol. The total halogen, which after the last precipitation exchange is present as chloride, is determined by a micro gravimetric procedure.
Satisfactory results were obtained when the methods were applied to natural mineral waters.
