Abstract

We present a leptodermous expansion of the nuclear binding energy which allows its decomposition into volume, surface and curvature parts. The two contributions to the curvature energy are thus identified and estimated in the framework of an energy density functional formalism. A general procedure for the calculation of the curvature energy with Skyrme like forces is outlined.
