Abstract

This report compares the functioning and productivity of a child guidance clinic during 5-year periods before and after the move into a comprehensive community mental health center. The transition was characterized by an accelerating case load, more efficient use of manpower, and diversification of programs despite the loss of organizational autonomy. Children and youth services retained their functional identity in the face of pressures for an undifferentiated intake. Blending of children and adult services, when both are in close proximity, stems from an urgency to serve large numbers of adults but may endanger programs for children.
