Summary
The frequency of meningeal growth of oligodendrogliomas in a routine series of investigations in 60 histologioally verified cases is described. Among 22 autopsies undoubted growth in the meninges was evident in 12, and of those no operation had been undertaken in four. Among 38 operated and 22 autopsy cases, on four occasions there was found a massive involvement of the meninges even among the tumour tissue removed at the first operation. Based on personal examples specific diagnostic difficulties arising from this are pointed out. The soft tissue structures which are encountered when tumour breaks out into the meninges are precisely described. The typical subpial growth of the oligodendroglioma is referred too. Tumour-seeding throughout the ventricular and the external c.s.f. pathways as well as extracranial metastases are included in the discussion.
