Conclusions

A common aim amongst European Neurosurgeons is to achieve improvement in standards of patient care and management, and improvements in standards of training. The two aspects are inseparable. The recommendations made in this paper relate primarily to the needs of basic training, which serves as the foundation for continuing indeed life-long training before the surgeon is ready to accept responsibilities appropriate to different degrees of experience.

It is hoped that the recommendations may form the basis in the future for recognition of neurosurgical departments in the context of a European Board of Certification in Neurosurgery.
