Optimizing the properties of corundum-based thermal insulation products using the method of experimental planning

Conclusions

In order to optimize the properties of the corundum-based thermal insulation products, a study was conducted on the effect of granulometry and the type of the filler using the method of experimental planning.

It was shown that increasing the limiting size of the filler grains decreases the apparent density and the ultimate compressive strength independent of the type of the filler.

Using the method of correlation-regression analysis, it was established that the weight content of the grains of the 2–3 mm fraction must not exceed 20% in the charge for obtaining products which can simultaneously satisfy the requirements of (low) apparent density and (high) ultimate compressive strength.

Based on the complex studies, we worked out the production technology and obtained a trial batch of corundum-based thermal insulation products withstanding a service temperature up to 1750°C.
