Conclusions
The action of CO on refractories is determined by the occurrence of several associated but essentially different processes: the chemical interaction between CO and iron-containing phases in the refractory and the decomposition of CO on metallic iron, obtained by the reduction of these phases. The interactions between CO and metallic Fe are the main processes that determine the stability of the refractories in a CO medium. The reaction of decomposition of CO with the formation of sooty carbon does not have any direct effect on the development of stresses in the refractory.
