Conclusions
In the presence of zinc oxide, corrosion of the chamotte of the aluminosilicate mixture accompanied by decomposition of mullite into its constituents is observed. The oxides of silicon and aluminum are thermodynamically unstable in contact with zinc oxide and react with formation of willemite and gahnite. Therefore to maintain the structural bonds of the aluminosilicate material and, consequently, to increase its resistance in service, increasing the apparent density of the lining and decreasing its gas permeability may be recommended.
