Certain regularities of the processes of corundum suspension preparation, slip casting, and sintering

Conclusions

The kinetics of dry milling of alumina in ceramic ball mills was studied and the obtained powders were characterized in detail.

We studied the interaction processes of the powders with the hydrochloric acid solution during the preparation of the suspensions. This process is accompanied by a considerable change in the pH value of the suspension (compared to the pH value of the original solution). Depending on the type of material, the concentration of the solution, and the magnitude of the specific interface area S PV , the value of ΔpH=pHc-pHeqm·soln reaches 5–6. The volumetric content of the chemically fixed liquid Wx in the suspension is also determined by the same factors. The activating effect of Wx on the sintering process of the castings was established.

Mechanical mixing (agitation) of the suspensions has a significant effect on the properties of the castings as well as the material obtained after firing. It was noted that there is a significant (more than 2 times) increase of σbnd of the material owing to additional mixing of the original suspension.

We characterized the binding properties of the suspensions which are significantly improved by introducing active components (SrO, BaO) into their composition.

We presented the examples of practical application of the developed suspensions as the binding systems for producing corundum-based ceramic concrete and corundum-mullite crucibles.
