Water-oil solubilization by long chain polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants

Summary

The phase diagrams of systems composed of polyoxyethylated nonionic surfactants / water / dodecane / pentanol are studied as a function of the oxyethylene chain length. The region of existence of the microemulsions is optimized for a surfactant containing ten oxyethylene units per molecule. The influence of the surfactant to cosurfactant ratio is investigated. The low interfacial tensions produced by these nonionic emulsifiers demonstrate an efficiency comparable to that of ionic emulsifiers.

Zusammenfassung

Die Phasendiagramme von Systemen aus nichtionischen polyoxyethylierten Tensiden, Wasser, Dodecan und Pentanol wurden als Funktion der Länge der Oxyethylen-Kette untersucht. Der Existenzbereich von Mikroemulsionen ist optimal für ein Tensid aus zehn Oxyethyleneinheiten per Mol. Auch der Einfluß des Verhältnisses Tensid : Cotensid wurde untersucht.

Die niedrigen Grenzflächenspannungen, die durch diese nichtionischen Emulgatoren erzeugt werden, zeigen eine Wirksamkeit, die sich mit der von ionischen Emulgatoren vergleichen 1äßt.
