Abstract
Construction and operation of a 300 keV electron-biprism interferometer are described. A conventionally produced electron beam is accelerated in a five-step acceleration tube. Within the interferometer magnetic quadrupoles are used as lenses.
The interferometer is used to measure the mean inner potentials of gold and copper. The high acceleration voltage permits to use evaporation layers of greater thickness than before.
Using a calibrated quartz oscillator device to measure the thickness of the layers, the error in thickness was reduced to 4%. The measured mean inner potentials are: Au (19.1 ± 2.2) V, Cu (17.7 ± 2.1) V.
