Abstract
Cross sections and spin polarization of low-energy electrons scattered by Bi(C6H5)3, C6H6, H2O and CCl4 molecules were measured in the energy range from 60 to 1600 eV and angular range from 30 to 150°.
The independent-atom model gives good agreement between measured and calculated cross sections and spin polarization at higher energies. At lower energies, the polarization of electrons scattered from Bi(C6H5)3 indicates the amount of screening of a central atom in a molecule by the surrounding radicals. In addition, the polarization measurements show that electrons scattered from molecules which consist of atoms with low atomic numbers are virtually unpolarized.
