Abstract
The absolute intensity and the spectrum of the visible and ultraviolet radiation from the discharge of a self-quenching Geiger-Müller counter was investigated between 2,200 and 6,500 Å. Because of the extremely weak radiation during the growth of the avalanches, an extremely sensitive optical spectrometer set-up was built, which was able to detect single photons from the counter discharge in small wavelength intervals. The intensity and spectrum of the discharge light was measured. Lines of neutral and single-ionized Argon were identified. The main intensity was found for wavelengths above 3,100 Å, but no lines below 2,800 Å. For large overvoltages, a weak continuum appeared between 2,300 and 2,800 Å.
