Conclusions
The character and dynamics of erosion of bottom plates protected by a refractory coating differ from those for plates protected by a steel sheet. The erosion of bottom plates with a refractory coating occurs uniformly over the whole area of the surface, but the erosion of bottom plates protected by steel sheets is craterlike.
Protection of bottom plates by a refractory coating based on silicic acid ash and zirconium concentrate is more effective than protection by steel sheets. For the same number of pourings, the service life of bottom plates with a refractory coating is over twice that of plates protected by steel sheets.
Protection of bottom plates for ingot molds by a refractory coating has been adopted at CherMZ, with an economic saving of 1–1.5 rubles per ton of melted steel.
