Summary
The torsional stiffness of statically indeterminate cylindrical thin-walled shells havingN-1 bars and given weight is optimized, variing only the wall-thickness. If the cross-section does not fullfill additional conditions, at leastN-1 parts of the shell must not participate in the optimization. The participating parts have constant thickness and their shear stress can be determined except to a common factor. The simple optimization condition defines a nonlinear system of equations, which is difficult to find, since it is unknown, which parts of the shell participate in the optimization. Therefore, a steepest descent method is given. Special advantages result from the possibility, to derive a closed form expression for the gradient vector from the principle of virtual forces.
