Abstract
The afterglow of nitrogen especially prepared to produce an auroral afterglow was investigated after excitation with r. f. discharge. The intensity of the first-positive system, the second-positive system, and the first-negative system showed after a remarkable drop an increase to a maximum. The height and the timal occurrence of the maximum have been investigated quantitatively as function of pressure and excitation conditions. The maximum could only be observed with pressures >1,8 Torr. There is strong evidence that the afterglow emissions of the three band systems during the maximum is governed by a special excitation mechanism common to all band systems.
