Summary
The present study compares the scattering from a complete two dimensional spherulite to that of a model consisting of two concentric spherulitic disks. The central disk has an optical “hole” and is separated from the outer disk by a circular trench which is also optically isotropic. Theoretical calculations are compared to the observed scattering from polyethylene oxide spherulites which fall into one class or the other. The scattering theory predicts a beating effect for the concentric spherulite model which periodically enhances the intensity of contiguous scattering maxima compared to the scattering for the complete spherulite. This is in line with observation of anisotropy scattering for the two classes of polyethylene oxide spherulites.
Electron micrographs of surface replicas of spherulites of low molecular weight polyethyleneoxide films cast from dilute chloroform solution have established that the optical isotropy of the central hole and circular trench which appear dark between crossed polaroids is due to a lamellar single crystal texture.
