Abstract
The thermally activated movement of dislocations over a statistical distribution of obstacles in the slip planes is considered. The mean free length of the dislocation between obstacles is calculated as a function of stress, obstacle density, and line tension. The interpretation of measurements of an activation volume for dislocation motion is being discussed assuming different dislocation — obstacle interaction profiles.
