Abstract

Measurements of the ionisation current in dielectric liquids due to soft X-rays are described. The field strength of the collecting field is raised to 50 kV/cm. Presupposing the validity ofJaffé's theory of columnar ionisation the saturation current can be extrapolated. In this way it is possible to estimate the rate of the energy per ion pair, if the absorbed radiation energy is known. The obtained rates are comparable with those in gases. It is interesting that the lapse of the current-voltage plot from liquid paraffins depends on the structure of the binding (N-paraffin orI-paraffin).
