Abstract
It is shown that the effective mass and its directional dependence can be determined from the rotation of the reflected linear polarized light under the influence of a magnetic field (Faraday-Effect in reflection). This method was applied to hexagonal single crystals of Selenium. For the effective mass, a value of about 10m 0 was obtained in the upper branch of the valence-band, in the lower branch a value of about 1m 0 was obtained (m 0=rest mass of the electron).
