Abstract
Plasma is accelerated by the discharge of a fast condenser bank through a conical, single turn brass-coil. The moving plasma is accompanied by a luminous phenomenon, which has been examined by the aid of a smear-camera and an image-converter-camera before and after having been reflected at a plane piston. Helium was used from 0.1 to 10 Torr. The propagation can be described by a power law. By means of these reflection experiments one cannot observe a non-luminous front preceding the luminous phenomenon in a tube of 18 cm length.
