Summary
On the basis of electronmicroscopical studies the development of microspores and microgametophytes is described forHeleocharis palustris. This has extended and confirmed earlier lightmicroscopical studies and again corrected observationes of some other authers.
Originally the pollen tetrad consists of one large and three small microspores which are separated by true cell walls. While the three small pollen grains soon degenerate, the large one develops into a “trinucleate” pollen grain. Only the surface of the tetrad becomes coated with an exine.
The first pollen mitosis occurs in a position close to the spore wall, and towards the interior of the tetrad. The wall of the generative cell develops similar as in somatic cells: a cell plate is formed, and grows by incorporation and deposition of wall material.
The generative cell is detached from the spore wall by constriction of its cell wall between the nucleus and the sporoderm.
The second pollen mitosis takes place inside the pollen grain, and produces two sperm cells. They are±elongate pear-shaped, and contain a pear-shaped nucleus, some ER, lipid-droplets and mitochondria but no plastids.
