Abstract
The variation with temperature of the lattice constant and paramagnetic susceptibility of CePd3 are reproduced theoretically on the basis of a model which takes into account the interaction of conduction- andf-electrons and the finite width of thef-band. The same model, with added exchange, yields quantitative agreement with susceptibility measurements on UNi5−x Cu x compounds (x=5 and 4.6). The theory also supplies a microscopic basis to the phenomenological model of Sales and Wohlleben.

The contribution of thef n−1 configuration tom (induced moment) is calculated in Rauchwarger, K., Jafarey, S., Wang, Y.-L.: Phys. Rev. B2, 3383 (1970), and in ref. 18. In the applications discussed here, this contribution is negligible

In those actinide compounds where the energy separation between the narrowf-level and the bottom of the conduction band is of the same order of magnitude asG, the interaction whose strength isG has an important role in causing first-order magnetic phase transitions; see e.g. Ref. 12 —
