Summary
The nitrogen fixation was investigated in laboratory incubation studies with undisturbed samples of litter and mull humus of a beech forest. The samples were taken at intervals of 3 weeks. The nitrogen gain during the 8 months of the experiment was 59 g N/ha in the litter and 214 g N/ha in the mull. A weak negative relation was apparent between the nitrogen fixation during the incubation and the accumulated mineral nitrogen at the beginning of incubation.
In further experiments the influence of ammonium nitrogen on the nitrogen fixation was studied with the same humus material. The nitrogen fixation stopped as soon as the amount of applied ammonium-N in relation to the available organic substances was increased until it corresponded to the ‘efficiency’ of nitrogen-fixing organisms.
