Abstract
The qualitative and quantitative importance of second-order strain interactions in paramagnetic rare earth systems is demonstrated within a recently developed theory. In an applied magnetic field second-order strain interactions contribute measurable anisotropy effects to transverse sound velocities, which are as large as rotational effects and which are not described by the conventional linear-strain theory. For the example of SmSb, the magnetic-field-dependent and field-independent second-order strain effects turn out to be of the same order of magnitude as the corresponding first-order strain effects.

On the r.h.s. of Eq.(4.13) of Ref. 9 the additional term +δ ω,o β〈O〉2 has been erroneously omitted, compare Pirc, R., and Dick, B.G., Phys. Rev. B9, 2701 (1974), Eq. (4). Although this term does not contribute toX in our case (〈J xJz+JzJx〉=0 and 〈Λ xz〉=0 even forH z≠0), it is in general nonzero for arbitrary directions of the magnetic field. I am indebted to P. Thalmeier for a discussion on this point
