Conclusion

By 31st December 1990, 47481 cases had been reported. This represents an increase of 50.7% (15984 new cases) since December 1989. Overall, in 1990, the increase in IVDU cases remains the main characteristic. Nevertheless, a regular increase in the percentage of cases infected by heterosexual contact is noted in practically all countries in the region. By the end of 1990, AIDS had caused over 20000 deaths in Europe.
