Abstract
The effect of inertia in three popular impulse experiments in shear flows of viscoelastic liquids is considered. Dynamics of the flow is used to evaluate the stress observables such as the shear stress and the first normal stress difference at the walls. In particular we find that for many linear viscoelastic models with slowly fading memory, the difference between experimental observables and a theory based on the assumption of ignorable inertia could be quite substantial.
