Summary
The application of high estrogen doses (up to a total of 25 mg of ethinylestradiol over five days) resulted in marked endometrial edema with stromal lacerations and severe hyperemia, together with a retardation of the secretory transformation by 3–4 days. There were disturbances both of glandular mucus production and of reticular fibre structure in the second half of the cycle. The similarity of these findings to the atypical endometria of infertile women and to the endometrial changes seen in rhesus monkeys given postcoital doses of estrogen suggest that the changes constitute the morphological basis for the inhibition of nidation by the „morning-after pill“.
