Summary
Enzyme-histochemical studies with longitudinal sections of the cervix uteri during different phases of the cycle. 54 wombs of women with normal menstrual cycle without any pathological changes visible at the endocervix were studied to detect presence and distribution of various enzymes occurring in the glands of the endocervix, the mucosa of the isthmus as well as the squamous epithelium of the cervix and the endometrium.
Within the squamous epithelium the various enzymes show a different distribution, but they do not seem to be cycle-dependent. The enzyme distribution occurring in the cervical glands, however, is definitely cycle-dependent. The peak of all secretory activity, especially as far as phosphatases, aminopeptidases and the enzymes of the pentose-phosphate cycle are concerned, was found to be in the second week of the cycle. — The most intensive reaction, however, when determining nearly all oxidoreductases, was found in the inconspicuous glands of the isthmus. These glands show an essential difference from all other glandular structures of the uterus and react in a similar way as the theca cells and the enzymeactive stromal cells of ovarian tumours.
