On phytin phosphorus in the soil

Summary

Phytin was isolated from a diluvial sand which has been cultivated for about 800 years. Various investigations of the organic phosphoric compounds isolated made it probable that the substance was phytin.

A method for a quantitative determination of phytin phosphorus in soil was worked out. In the heath soil in question 163 p.p.m. phytin phosphorus was found to correspond to 46 per cent. of the total content of organically held phosphorus.

In acid soils phytin is presumably found as ferric phytate and in basic soils possibly as calcium phytate.
