Abstract
Under the usual assumptions of nuclear stripping theory, it is shown that the proportionality constant connecting the polarization of outgoing particles and of residual nuclei is determined by the quantum numbers of the initial and final states of the nucleus only. Therefore, a simultaneous measurement of both quantities provides a sensitive test of the validity of those assumptions without the nexessity of detailed numerical calculations. The well-known theoretical properties of the nucleon polarization (¦Pnucl¦ ≦ 1/3, Pnucl positive or negative, if j=l + 1/2 orj=l−1/2) do not hold for the nuclear polarization, the sign of which is independent ofj and which may assume the value one.
