Abstract
The secondary electrons produced by penetrating X-rays and gamma rays move preferentially in the forward direction. In an insulator absorption of the photon beam is therefore accompanied by an electron current. The current can be measured by a suitable receiver that collects the electrons and absorbs the photons. In this paper an approximate expression for the Compton current is established. Results of preliminary measurements are given and found to be in satisfactory agreement with the theory.
