Abstract
The evaluation of the observable part of vacuum polarization for the electron-positron field interacting with an external electromagnetic field is discussed on the basis of a model field in one space dimension. The mathematically ambiguous vacuum expectation value of the charge-current density can be defined by two postulates following from gauge-invariance. In the light of these postulates the applicability of usually employed auxiliary prescriptions (regularisation or causal connection between external and induced current) is reexamined.
