A composition material from graphite and high-melting compounds

Conclusions

The characteristic which distinguishes the composition material ÉGS-40 from graphite is its greater high-temperature erosion resistance. The range of useful properties is the same as that of other graphite materials so that the potential fields of application of ÉGS-40 are wide.

ÉGS-40, moreover, has a positive temperature-dependent coefficient of electrical resistance like that of most metals with electron conductivity, and an adequate emission power; the resistivity increases only slightly with the temperature.

The investigation demonstrated the efficiency of ÉGS-40 as electrode material for industrial-type open-cycle MHD generators. It may also find an application in electrothermics as heating element in an oxidizing medium and in other fields of high-temperature techniques.

It must be borne in mind that among the important considerations for the practical utilization of a given material are the economic factors, notably the cost of the material and its natural reserves. ÉGS-40 will probably be abundant and cheap because it is based on graphite.
