The concept of itinerant ferromagnetism, which allows for a local exchange splitting without long range magnetic order, is used to derive a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian governing the magnetic properties. The Hamiltonian obtained has some similarities, but is not identical to a Heisenberg Hamiltonian.
