Abstract

Platyspondyly will be defined and its eriology discussed. The condition may be congenital or manifests itself later in life (osteochondrodysplasia). It can be caused by metabolic, endocrine or haematological diseases als well as by infections, tumors or trauma. The following aspects are important for classifying etiology and pathogenesis: age of the child, density and shape of the vertebra, number of affected vertebral index and vertebral disc index. Examples for various forms of platyspondyly will be presented.
